The United States of America has again reiterated its support for Cameroon’s unity and called on the Cameroonian Diaspora to positively work towards the resolution of the crisis in the North West and South West regions.
The statement is from US Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy. To Mr Tibor, the US will not collaborate with Diaspora leaders who are preaching hate speech and fuelling the crisis in the two English speaking regions.
“The United States supports Cameroon’s territorial integrity and urges all actors to respond peacefully to long-term grievances that fuel the current conflict in the North-West and South-West regions and to stop exacerbating the difficulties experienced by civilians in these areas.” He declared.
Below is the full statement from the US Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy;
“The Cameroonian Diaspora in the United States can and must play an essential role in ending violence in Cameroon.
As a community, your influence can be felt through public remarks, private conversations, remittances, international conferences, and social media posts.
We encourage you to constructively use the power of your voices to promote peace by engaging with Cameroonians around the world, the U.S. Government, Congress and on social media.
We rely on the Cameroonian Diaspora in the United States to participate constructively in addressing its concerns about Cameroon. We will not be working with groups – nor attending events organized by the Diaspora – that include calls to violence or hate speech. The United States supports Cameroon’s territorial integrity and urges all actors to respond peacefully to long-term grievances that fuel the current conflict in the North-West and South-West regions and to stop exacerbating the difficulties experienced by civilians in these areas.
The United States Government considers the Cameroonian Diaspora as a critical community that can press for meaningful change in Cameroon to respond to long-term grievances, support the safety of humanitarian workers, bring children back to school safely and put end to fighting that led to untold suffering.”
